"TWO QUEENS"

We play games, try on new roles, hide behind masks. We need one to build interactions with colleagues at work, another when communicating with family, and in a third we meet a loved one. In communication with people, we strive to create an image in which our strengths are emphasized, and our shortcomings and vices are hidden, pushed into a dark corner and bolted. This is most clearly manifested in our social networks, this stormy photo stream of beautiful, successful, loving and beloved people. We endlessly clean and retouch our bright-faced image, mercilessly driving ourselves into generally accepted standards, following someone's standards and expectations. But sooner or later, each of us suddenly stops and is left alone with ourselves. Only with ourselves... And at this moment, makeup and tinsel become so ridiculous and funny, rustling in the wind of eternity. Achievements, diplomas, status - here, on the territory of the soul, they have no weight. Likes, followers, hype - how pathetic they are at this moment.
In front of us is a mirror, but who is behind it? After all, everything that we do not want to show and shamefully hide in the closet of the subconscious has not gone anywhere. Moreover, our dark side lives its own parallel life. And since all our control and attention are directed at the formation and nurturing of the external image, the repressed alter ego remains unconscious and beyond our control.
What is there, behind the cracked amalgam of our inner mirror, what is hidden in its cold depths?
Our instincts are squeezed and suppressed there. But along with them, there is intuition and creative insights. There is sexuality.
Of course, aggression and anger are hidden there. But along with them, there is spontaneity and daring.
There is the open and surprised look of a child, his long-forgotten fantasies and dreams...

"Brothers"

The confrontation between brothers is an ancient biblical story. Born as a symbol of the unity of all humanity, Cain and Abel in reality began to personify the most fierce and irreconcilable enmity, a split in society.

Brothers grow up in the same family, raised and educated in the same cultural tradition, using the same examples. They are similar in appearance, so much so that they are always confused. But here they are standing in front of each other, preparing for a fight. Both are strong and desperately brave, both are confident in themselves and are not ready to compromise. Both go to the end and never give up. In this equality of strength and conviction to stand to the death is the insane drama and hopelessness of this fight. They know each other down to the smallest detail, down to the slightest eye movement, down to the twitch of a vein. It's like shadowboxing, the enemy reads your thoughts, repeats your movements, anticipates your blows, and circles in the mirror dance of death.

They stand, brother against brother, knowing that the battle will be terrible. They will put all their hatred and all their love, all their intelligence and all their passion, all their courage and all their despair into it. They will break, reveal, smear these familiar features, familiar for as long as you can remember. They will tear everything that connected them, scatter the memories, the eyes of the mother, the hands of the father. Cheekbones will crumble and walls will break, entire cities will be erased. They are facing each other. They look into these painfully dear, but now so alien eyes and see themselves reflected in them...

PRAYER

The bell strikes, the sound hits the walls, rushes through deserted galleries, raises flocks birds over the domes.

Another blow, the sound rises in a huge wave and splashes out to the morning city.

A blow, and now copper is buzzing and vibrating inside me...

We ask for strength - God sends trials to strengthen us.
We ask for wisdom - God sets us tasks that need to be overcome head.
We ask for courage - God sends us dangers.
We ask for love - and God brings to us people who need ours help.
We ask for blessings - and God gives us opportunities.

"PETERSBURG"

Petersburg in the rain looks like an Island, majestic and gray-haired, washed by an ocean of water falling from the sky in an endless stream. Rain verticals cut through the cliffs of houses, cut off layers of facades and colonnades from them, bring down and carry away into the gray shroud of the Gulf of Finland. Canals overflow their banks, flooding pavement stones, washing away the white lines of roads and the red plumes of cars. It is impossible to hide from this rain, you can only dissolve in it, become a part of it, stepping without looking back into this Rain City.

"BREAK AWAY"

Careful touch. Fingertips. Blind fingers pave new roads by touch. Dizzy from the smell of her hair. Kiss. The city slowly explodes in my head, bridges soar up, throwing up tram cars chasing each other. Cars spin their wheels helplessly in the air. The walls of the houses hang above the ground, the wires that pull them together strain and burst, cutting the sky. Then, accelerating, the floating fragments twist into some kind of insane tight spiral and in an instant shrink into one point, a small black pupil. He is so close that I can see how the blue universe of her eyes is being born around him, gathering from a cloud of fragments.
The white silence gradually dissipates, letting in the sounds of the city. We are standing at a crossroads, and streams of cars are rushing around.

"TOCSIN"

I have been working on this topic for a long time. At first, it was just a gesture - a hand closing its eyes from something that was impossible to look at, unbearable, scary. I thought about the war, approaching inexorably and inevitably, about the war that goes on constantly, smoldering like a fire covered with sand.

Then, almost one after the other, two events that shocked me happened. In 2018, in the small Karelian town of Kondopoga, the unique wooden Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin burned down. And less than a year later, in 2019, Notre Dame Cathedral, the majestic Notre Dame, burned down in Paris. Both temples are dedicated to the Mother of God. The Assumption Church burned down 18 days before the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, and Notre Dame Cathedral 5 days before Catholic Easter. Two terrible fires, two tragedies, but how different they sounded.

The Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God was located on the site of the former village of Kondopoga, which gave its name to the city of the same name. The temple was built in 1774 on a small cape of Lake Onega. It was one of the most beautiful wooden churches of the Russian North, a national masterpiece, famous and textbook. A real symbol of the outgoing Rus'. The church burned down in a couple of hours, they could not save it. In the evening they showed it on the news. And all...

The Church of the Assumption in Kondopoga is a textbook monument, glorified, extremely valuable and, until August 10, 2018, extremely well-preserved. With beautiful paintings of the sky, with an iconostasis in the interior. It was a national masterpiece, it was not just one of the symbols of Russian wooden architecture, but a symbol of Russia. Real Russia.

The death of a shrine of such importance and such artistic quality cannot be an accident. The temple in Kondopoga, by the way, successfully survived the Patriotic, World War I, Finnish, Great Patriotic Wars, all our revolutions and perestroika. And in our peacetime, he suddenly took it and burned down.

Notre Dame burned live on all television channels, in front of millions of viewers. There was a feeling that not only the whole of Paris, but the whole world froze in some kind of stupor, cold horror from the improbability of the catastrophe that was taking place. The huge, majestic cathedral burned for a long time, as if in slow motion, breaking up into thousands and thousands of frames of photos and videos.

Awareness of the tragedy began to come later. At first they remembered that the fire started on the first day of Holy Week. Then - that the day before the sculptures of the apostles were removed for restoration. But most importantly, a painful and bitter feeling gradually emerged that the death of the cathedral was not accidental. Over the past eight and a half centuries of wars, revolutions and epidemics, it could burn down dozens of times.

Orthodox preacher Archpriest Andrei Tkachev commented on the tragedy in Paris in this way: “There is a terrible pattern and even inexorability in this conflagration, for all its unexpectedness. No matter how it plays the role of the funeral pyre of Europe, which is suddenly and forever taken away from what she herself has ceased to appreciate and internally has long lost.

Indeed, if there is no more God in people, then the temples built in His honor are not needed either. If temples become only architectural monuments and are associated by the majority only with history and culture, then they simply die.

CRUCIFIXION

The concept is based on an attempt to rethink this mega-image, which, like the underwater part of an iceberg, unites world culture, history, religion and art. By dividing the image into two parts, I want to make the viewer feel the meaning of the void suspended between the two paintings. This emptiness, gap, absence of the most important thing that we expect to see here becomes the main part of the diptych. At the same time, the proportions and dimensions of this space between the paintings are very important, it can neither be wider nor narrower.
